Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping in Red Deer? Here's What It Means

A breaker that keeps tripping is doing its job. The question is what's making it trip and whether it's safe to reset. In most Red Deer homes, the answer falls into one of five buckets, and three of them you can sort out yourself in under ten minutes. The other two need a licensed electrician on site before something melts behind your drywall.

Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?

Your breaker trips because it detected current flow that could damage wiring or start a fire. The Canadian Electrical Code rates residential circuits so a breaker carries no more than 80% of its rating on a continuous load, which means a 15-amp circuit is good for about 12 amps running non-stop. Overloaded circuits are one of the most common fire causes we see, and the easiest to fix.

In Red Deer, we see the same pattern over and over. Houses built between 1960 and 1995, which is a big chunk of the housing stock from Morrisroe through Highland Green, often have 60-amp or 100-amp panels that were never designed for two TVs, an air fryer, a hot tub, and a level-2 EV charger running at the same time. The panel isn't broken. It's full.

Here's how to tell which of the five causes you're dealing with.

The short version

The Canadian Electrical Code sizes circuits so a breaker carries no more than 80% of its rating on a continuous load. In our day-to-day work in Red Deer, overloaded circuits and aged breakers/panels are the two causes we hit most, which makes the panel itself the most common point of failure in older homes here.

Cause 1: Overloaded circuit (the most common, and usually DIY)

About 60% of the "breaker keeps tripping" calls Spark takes are simple overloads, and homeowners can fix most of them without picking up the phone. An overload happens when too many devices on one circuit pull more amps than the breaker is rated for. Hair dryers, space heaters, microwaves, and window AC units are the usual suspects.

How to identify it:

  • The breaker trips when you turn on a specific high-draw appliance

  • It trips at the same time of day (usually morning routine or dinner prep)

  • It's a 15-amp or 20-amp breaker in a kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom

DIY fix: Unplug everything on that circuit. Reset the breaker. Plug things back in one at a time until you find the device that pushes it over the edge. Move that device to a different circuit. Done.

When to call: If you can't find anything obvious drawing power, or if the same circuit overloads with normal use, the wiring or the panel is undersized for the home. That's a Spark call.

Danger level: Low, as long as the breaker is actually tripping. That's the safety system working.

Cause 2: Short circuit (more serious, unplug everything)

A short circuit is when a hot wire touches a neutral wire or another hot wire, creating a sudden surge of current. The breaker trips instantly. Short circuits and arcing faults are a major share of the house fires that start in wiring, which is exactly why a breaker that trips the instant you reset it should never be ignored.

How to identify it:

  • The breaker trips the instant you reset it, with nothing plugged in

  • You see a black or brown scorch mark on a plug, cord, or outlet

  • A specific appliance trips the breaker the second it's plugged in

  • There's a faint burning smell near an outlet

DIY fix: Unplug every device on the circuit. Reset the breaker once. If it holds, plug devices back in one at a time. If one device trips it instantly, that device has an internal short and needs to be replaced (not repaired).

When to call: If the breaker trips with nothing plugged in, the short is in the wall wiring, the outlet, or the breaker itself. Stop resetting it and call Spark. Repeated resets on a real short heat up the wire insulation and that's how fires start inside walls.

Danger level: Medium to high. Treat it as urgent.

Cause 3: Ground fault (bathrooms, kitchens, outdoor, anywhere wet)

A ground fault happens when current escapes the circuit and finds a path to ground, usually through water or a person. GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlets and breakers detect this in a fraction of a second, fast enough to stop electrocution. Current Alberta code requires GFCI protection on bathroom, kitchen, garage, outdoor, and wet-area outlets, and we add it whenever we touch those circuits.

How to identify it:

  • The tripping outlet or breaker is marked "GFCI" or "TEST/RESET"

  • It trips when you use anything in a bathroom, kitchen counter, garage, or outdoor outlet

  • It trips after rain or snowmelt (outdoor outlets, deck plugs)

  • A hair dryer, kettle, or pressure washer set it off

DIY fix: Press the RESET button on the GFCI outlet. If a downstream outlet caused it, that outlet stays dead until you reset the upstream GFCI. Check every bathroom, kitchen, garage, and outdoor plug for a GFCI you can reset.

When to call: If the GFCI won't reset, trips repeatedly, or the area is wet inside the box, that's an electrician call. Could be water in the box, a failed GFCI (they wear out around year 10), or a fault in the wiring.

Danger level: Low for nuisance trips, high if water is involved. Don't reset a wet outlet.

Cause 4: Arc fault breaker tripping (AFCI, almost always pro work)

They detect dangerous arcing in wiring (the kind that starts fires inside walls) and trip before things get hot enough to ignore. They exist because a big chunk of house fires start as arcing in branch wiring, and an AFCI catches it before it ever gets that far.

How to identify it:

  • The breaker has a yellow or white test button on the breaker itself, marked "AFCI" or "ARC FAULT"

  • It trips at random times, often when no one is home

  • It trips when a specific switch is flipped or a specific outlet is used

  • The home was built or renovated after 2002 and the tripping circuit serves a bedroom

DIY fix: Honestly, very little. You can try unplugging everything on the circuit and resetting once. If it holds for a few days with nothing plugged in, the issue is a device. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, the issue is in the wiring.

When to call: Almost always. AFCI tripping is usually a sign of damaged wiring inside the wall, a loose connection at an outlet, or a failing AFCI breaker itself. Diagnosing it requires a meter, a wiring diagram, and patience. Call Spark.

Danger level: Medium. AFCI trips are warnings about fire risk, not just nuisance trips. Take them seriously.

Cause 5: Failing breaker or panel (Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok, Zinsco, fuse panels)

Some panels fail at a rate the rest of the industry replaces under warranty. Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok, Zinsco, and old screw-in fuse panels are the three Mac sees most often in older Red Deer homes, and all three have documented histories of breakers that don't trip when they should, or trip constantly when they shouldn't. Most Alberta home insurers (including Wawanesa and Intact) flag these panels as insurance concerns, and we deal with that conversation regularly.

How to identify it:

  • The panel says "Federal Pioneer," "Federal Pacific," "Stab-Lok," "Zinsco," or has screw-in fuses

  • Multiple breakers trip across different circuits

  • A breaker trips but the switch doesn't move to the middle position

DIY fix: None. Do not open the panel cover. These panels have known issues with energized parts being exposed once the cover is off.

Why does my AC trip the breaker when it kicks on?

Air conditioners pull a big surge of current in the first 1-2 seconds (called locked-rotor amperage) that can run several times higher than the running amperage. What's the difference between AFCI and GFCI?

GFCIs (ground fault) protect people from electrocution. They trip in 1/40th of a second when current escapes the circuit. AFCIs (arc fault) protect the house from fire. Modern Alberta code requires both in different areas: GFCIs in wet locations (bathrooms, kitchens, outdoors), AFCIs in bedrooms and most living areas. Why does my breaker trip with nothing plugged in?

Three possibilities, in order of likelihood: a short circuit inside the wall wiring, a failing breaker, or an AFCI detecting arc faults from damaged wiring. None are DIY. Stop resetting and call Spark. Tripping with nothing plugged in means the fault is permanent and inside the structure, which means it can't be solved by changing what's plugged in.

Is a tripping breaker covered by my home insurance?

The breaker itself isn't, but fire damage from electrical faults usually is, as long as the home was up to code at the time of inspection. Wawanesa, Intact, and most Alberta carriers ask about panel age and type at renewal. If you have a Federal Pioneer Stab-Lok or Zinsco panel, some carriers will require upgrade before renewing.
